there is a rhythm to technology that we have quietly agreed on. Once a year, your phone announces a major update. New design, new features, a few things moved to places you have to find again. You complain for a week, then you learn it. Younger people learn it faster. Older people learn it slower. Someone who never held a smartphone does not learn it at all, and the world moves one step further away from them.
The rhythm matters more than the features. One year is enough time to become fluent again before fluency is taken away. The system changes slower than you can learn.
Now shorten the interval. Imagine the major update arrives every month. Then every week. Then every day. Each morning, your phone is a new machine. Do you learn today’s version, knowing that tomorrow deletes the effort? Or do you skip it and wait, knowing that the waiting never ends? Both answers are wrong. The choice itself has stopped making sense.
Now remove the word “phone.” The daily update comes for your car, your television, your bank, the software you use to earn your salary. Nobody could learn all of it even at the yearly rhythm. At the daily rhythm, you stop trying to understand the system and start negotiating with it. You type a request in plain words. Something enormous happens where you cannot see it. A result comes back. You do not know how. After a while, you no longer ask how.
If that sounds familiar, it should. It is how most people already use artificial intelligence.
The thought experiment is usually filed under the future. It describes the present in more places than we like to admit.
“The stock market is just a big computer now” is said as a boring fact, the way people say the weather is bad. Consider what the sentence actually contains: the largest allocation of human wealth happens at speeds no human confirms, in patterns no human designed in detail. The people involved do not supervise the trading. They supervise summaries of what the trading did.
Parliaments write rules for systems their members cannot describe. The hearings are famous for it: elected officials asking how a platform earns money, while the platform’s engineers have already moved to the next architecture. By the time a regulation arrives, it regulates the previous version of the problem. A deliberative process that needs years cannot govern a system that changes in months. The mismatch is structural, and it widens.
A doctor spends a decade learning to read what a body is saying. A model now reads the same signals in a second, across a million cases the doctor will never see. The doctor still matters, but the reason has changed. She decides whether to trust the analysis, and she sits with you when it is bad news. That is real work. It is also a different profession than the one she trained for.
A university degree takes four or five years. The tools of most professions are now replaced faster than that. A student who enrolls today is being prepared for a labor market that will be redesigned before graduation, by teachers who cannot know the redesign either. Schools were always a step behind the world, and for centuries this was tolerable, because the world honored the delay: what you learned at twenty was still true at forty. That agreement is gone. The institution still issues its certificates. The paper now lasts longer than the knowledge behind it.
None of this began with a chatbot in late 2022. The chatbot only gave the shift a face. The surrender had been spreading for decades, sector by sector, wherever the speed of a system passed the speed of the people responsible for it.
This is why the singularity keeps failing to arrive on schedule. We imagine it as a date: a before and an after. But a threshold that different fields cross at different speeds does not produce a morning. It produces a long, uneven crossing that no single person witnesses in full. The singularity is not an event you will watch. It is a condition you enter, and the entrance is personal. For you, it begins on the day you stop trying to catch up.
Some people passed that day years ago. The trader passed it when the terminal became a black box. The translator passed it recently. The lawmaker is passing it now, on camera, in a hearing.
What does it feel like from inside? Not like science fiction. It feels like standing in front of endless possibility and being unable to move. Too many options work on a person the same way as none. And the paralysis has only one cure: the only tool that can manage the flood of technology is technology. You answer the complexity of the machine by asking the machine. The loop closes. The loop is the singularity, running.
